Rental boats offer wonderful, relaxing holidays on the extensive network of waterways throughout France and beyond.

Loire Penichette lock

LOCABOAT are the creators of the Penichette; a fibreglass ‘houseboat’ in the style of a traditional barge (peniche in French).  They offer cruises throughout France and Europe with a fleet of 380 boats, including three models of Penichettes, the cruiser-style Europa boats and the Linssen Grand Sturdy, which is available in Burgundy, Loire and Ireland.

  • Our favourite boats have ensuite bathrooms, easy access from inside to the bow and stern and a flying bridge where everyone can join the ‘pilot’ and enjoy lunch and dinner outdoors.  That describes the Penichette Flying Bridge models.  However for rivers and lagoons we prefer the Europa boats, as they are deeper in the water and cope better with currents and tides – ideal for Venice.  We also adore the beautiful Linssen steel-hulled boats and the Grand Sturdy 34.9 with two cabins and two bathrooms is the perfect boat for one or two couples.
  • Our favourite routes include Locaboat’s one way cruises in Burgundy and Aquitaine, closely followed by return cruises on the Venice lagoon and rivers from Chioggia.

In Burgundy, there are two excellent one way routes.  Canal and river cruising between St Leger sur Dheune (west of Chalon-sur-Saone) and Macon,  and the Nivernais route between Joigny and Corbigny and the Burgundy Canal between Joigny and Montbard.

  • The first is from St Leger sur Dheune to Macon, which is a lovely one week holiday, requiring about 27 hours cruising, and incorporating the Canal du Centre, Saone River and the picturesque Seille River (photo above) up to Louhans.  It is also worth considering a 10 day rental to allow more time for the Cote de Beaune and Chalonais vineyards, the nature reserve near Cuisery and Pont de Vaux.
  • The Nivernais route includes the Yonne River and the beautiful Nivernais Canal, plus pretty villages, the magnificence of Auxerre, good food and the Auxerrois vineyards. It requires about 33 hours cruising, so for a relaxing holiday a 10 day rental is best.

Locaboat-Agen pont canal

  • In Aquitaine there’s an easy one way, one week cruise between Agen and Valance sur Baise, incorporating canal and river cruising. Features include the 549m aqueduct over the Garonne River (above),  the wines of Buzet, the glassmakers of Vianne, lovely Nerac and the Armagnac distillers of Condom.

  • Venice is a city in a lagoon so what better way to visit and explore its islands than by boat? Cruise up the Lido (beaches) and discover Burano (lace), Murano (glass), St Erasmo (market gardens) and Torcello (cathedral) at your own pace and explore in the evening when the tourists have left.  Or cruise the Brenta River up to Padova, stopping at the famous Palladian villas along the way.  Or explore the Po Delta nature reserve and its teeming birdlife.  The lagoon, its rivers and islands, is a magical watery kingdom with a long summer that lasts into October.
