Alsace Bridge Strasbourg

Freewheeling France – ALSACE self-guided driving holiday

Driving holidays for people who want to explore independently with the security of a planned itinerary. Tell us where you want to go, how long you’ve got, your must-see sights, preferred type of accommodation and leave the rest to us.

While all holidays are fully customised, some regions, such as ALSACE, are requested often.   Strasbourg is just over 2 hours from Paris by TGV and Nancy is only 1.5 hours, so both are convenient starting points for exploring this picturesque region. Strasbourg has the world-famous cathedral and a delightful historic centre, including La Petite France, while Nancy has the magnificent Place Stanislas and was a centre of the Art Nouveau movement, with many notable buildings and a wonderful museum.

Below is an itinerary from Nancy to Strasbourg, but many clients start in Strasbourg.  The itinerary is often extended south to the Jura region and the car returned at Dijon station because of its good TGV connections.

Day 1 – To Nancy for a central hotel, with parking,  on the edge of the main square, or a charming  7- room hotel in a 16th century building.

Day 2 – Discover Nancy’s history, museums, glass and shops. Overnight Nancy.

Day 3 – Collect your rental car and head east to Saverne, via the beautiful Zorn Valley and the remarkable boat lift at Arzviller. Check in to your central family-owned hotel, then relax and explore Saverne.

Day 4 – Excursion to La Petite Pierre and the Northen Vosges regional park with its many castles, including Chateau de Fleckenstein. Overnight Saverne.

Day 5 – Head south to Marmoutier (notable church),  followed by a short walk through a pine forest for the Cascade du Nideck.  Continue to Obernai for a walkabout and lunch, then follow the route des vins to the towering castle at Haut Koenigsbourg and to the picture postcard village of Riquewihr for a charming 3 star hotel with parking.

Day 6 – Follow the wine route via more castles to the wine village of Eguisheim, then south to the huge outdoor Eco-museum. Overnight Riquewihr.

Day 7 – Rest day in Riquewihr and possibly walk the Grand Cru vineyards circuit.

Day 8 – Full day excursion to discover Colmar. Overnight Riquewihr.

Day 9 – North to Strasbourg for a charming central hotel. Return the rental car, then relax and enjoy the city.

Day 10 – To the station for a train to your next destination, or take the shuttle to Basel-Mulhouse Airport for your onward flight.
