Barging – Aquitaine

Aquitaine is south-west France and is renowned for the vineyards of Bordeaux, the rich, lush valley of the Garonne river with its orchards and markets, medieval villages and fortified bastides, ancient castles, Moissac Abbey and armagnac distilleries.

The Garonne River is navigable from the Gironde Estuary to Castes-en-Dorthe, where it joins the Canal de Garonne, which connects with Toulouse, where it meets the Canal du Midi.  The river and estuary are tidal with significant level variations and very strong currents.   The canal is far gentler and features two impressive canal bridges over the river at Agen and Moissac and, at Montech, near Montauban, there’s the spectacular Water Slope, which replaces 5 locks.
