BURGUNDY is the heart of France and with over 900kms of waterways, superb food & wine, a rich legacy of art, architecture & culture and its close proximity to Paris, it is perfect for barge cuising. The Burgundy Canal links the Seine and Saone rivers and a tunnel at the summit divides it into two regions; the Yonne side (WEST) and Cote d’Or side (EAST).
WESTERN Burgundy has Auxerre as its principal town and includes the Nivernais Canal, Yonne River and the Yonne side of the Burgundy Canal. Our home in France was at lock 52 on the Yonne side of the Burgundy Canal, so we have a deep affection for its gentle rolling landscape of green fields and forest. The Nivernais is the sleepy backwater of Burgundy with few barges. The canal is a tricky waterway, as it interweaves with the river Yonne and has low bridges, shallows, currents and manual locks, but it rewards you with a beautiful and varied landscape of woodland, cliffs, fields, vineyards and charming villages.
