SOUTH OF FRANCE  from Nice – outline
Day 1  (Sunday)  5.00pm meet for drinks and introductions at our central hotel in NICE.   Walk to DINNER at a restaurant.
Day 2  Morning walking tour of Nice ending at a wine cellar for a tasting.  Free afternoon to enjoy the many sights of Nice.
Day 3  All day excursion with a local guide to Villa Rothschild, Monaco and the picturesque hilltop village of Eze.
Day 4  Transfer day, driving west for the spectacular Corniche de l’Esterel, en route to the fishing village of Cassis.
Day 5  Free day to enjoy the harbour, cobbled alleyways and beach, then a boat excursion around the spectacular cliff-lined coast.
Day 6  Free morning in Cassis, followed by an excursion to the 362m high cliffs at Cap Canaille, then up to the picturesque hill-top village of Castellet and return via the vineyards.
Day 7  Head north for the Luberon and its pretty villages, stopping at Chateau de Val Joanis for its wine and garden.   Continue to L’Isle sur la Sorgue and settle in your self-contained studio-apartment in the centre of the village, before walking to DINNER at a nearby restaurant.
Day 8  Free day to explore L’Isle sur la Sorgue, its antique shops and huge Sunday market.  Late afternoon excursion to Fontaine de Vaucluse, followed by an early DINNER.
Day 9  Full day excursion to the Lavender Museum, Abbaye de Senanque, the picture-postcard village of Gordes and Roussillon for the colourful ochre quarries.   Evening free.
Day 10  To Avignon for a gourmet walking tour, then free time to discover the huge papal palace and the famous bridge.
Day 11  Excursion to St Remy-de Provence for its Wednesday market and the Van Gogh walking trail, then on to Les Baux before returning via a biodynamic vineyard.
Day 12  West  to Toulouse, via Carcassonne for a walk around the walls of La Cité.  Walk to DINNER at a restaurant.
Day 13  Walking tour of Toulouse, then free time to relax and explore its shops, museums and churches.
Day 14  Transfer to the railway station.   Tour ends.
OR extend the tour with a cruise on the Canal du Midi, or the Canal de Garonne by – hotel barge, or rental boat.
 
 
DORDOGNE from Bordeaux – outline
Day 1  5.00pm meet for drinks and introductions at our central hotel in BORDEAUX.  Walk to DINNER at a restaurant.
Day 2  Morning excursion to the Margaux vineyards, including two wine tastings.  Free afternoon to enjoy Bordeaux.
Day 3  Free morning in Bordeaux, followed by an excursion to St Emilion for a guided tour of the village with a wine tasting.
Day 4  Depart Bordeaux for the Dordogne Valley, stopping at one or two gardens before reaching Les Eyzies de Tayac.   DINNER at the hotel restaurant.
Day 5   Excursion up the Vezere valley for the cliff face settlement at La Roque St Christophe and the remarkable cave drawings at Lascaux II.   Return via Chateau de Losse for its lovely garden.
Day 6  Visit the Grand Roc caves for the exquisite stalagmites and stalactites, then free time to discover Les Eyzies’ Prehistory Museum, shop and relax.
Day 7  Visit a truffiere and hunt the elusive truffle, then over the hills to Sarlat for a five night stay in a charming B&B, or a self-contained apartment.   DINNER at restaurant.
Day 8  Excursion to Terrasson for its unique contemporary gardens, historic old town, the chocolate museum and possibly its Thursday market.
Day 9  Free morning to enjoy Sarlat’s medieval streets, then an excursion to a working nut mill and the delightful formal gardens at the Manoir d’Eyrignac.
Day 10  Free morning in Sarlat, then an excursion to the towering castle at Beynac et Cazenac and the dramatic cliff top gardens at Marqueyssac.
Day 11  Excursion to the cliffside village of Rocamadour and the Gouffre de Padirac where we’ll explore the vast cavern by boat.
 Day 12  Transfer to the railway station in Brive, or Toulouse.   Tour ends.
 OR extend the tour into the Lot Valley for its vineyards, Pech Merle and St Cirq Lapopie and possibly including Cordes sur Ciel and Albi, before ending in Toulouse.

PYRENEES  from Bordeaux – outline
Day 1  5.00pm meet for drinks & introductions at our central hotel in BORDEAUX.  Walk to DINNER at a restaurant.

Day 3  Free morning in Bordeaux, followed by an excursion to St Emilion for a guided tour of the village with a wine tasting.
Day 4  Depart Bordeaux for the Landes region, stopping at the Ecomusée de Marqueze en route to St Jean de Luz.
Day 5  Free day to explore St Jean de Luz and enjoy the beach.  Optional walk to the botanical gardens.
Day 6  Excursion to Ascain for the Petit Train up the mountain La Rhune, spotting eagles and vultures.  Next, visit Sare for a walk-about and lunch and Espellette for its peppers and chocolate.  Return to St Jean via Cambo les Bains for Edmond Rostand’s house and garden.
Day 7  Excursion to Bayonne for its cathedral, museums, chocolate shops and delightful streets.
Day 8  Excursion into Spain to Bilbao for the Guggenheim museum, returning via San Sebastian for walk-about and tapas.
Day 9  Visit the Grottes d’Isturitz et Oxelcelhaya for a guided visit en route to the Bearn region.  After settling in to our charming B&B, Yves will introduce us to the Jurancon wines, while Nicole prepares DINNER.
Day 10 Excursion into the Pyrenees visiting Lescun, Borce and l’Hopital St Blaise.
Day 11  Excursion to Pau with optional visits to a museum of Bayonne Ham and/or an open air Bee Museum.  Possibility of an evening hot air balloon flight.
Day 12  Transfer to the train station in Toulouse.   Tour ends.
Optional extra nights in Toulouse to discover this wonderful town.

ESCAPE TO EUROPE for a WINTER CHRISTMAS  – outline
Day 1  5.00pm meet for drinks & introductions at a central hotel in LYON.  Walk to DINNER at a restaurant.
Day 2  Morning visit to a traditional silk weaving workshop.  Free afternoon to enjoy Lyon’s many sights, shops and chocolateries.  Evening walk to experience the spectacular Fete des Lumieres; probably the world’s best light festival, then DINNER.
Day 3 Walking tour of Vieux Lyon to explore the medieval streets and visit the traboules – secret passages running between the streets.  Free afternoon.  Fete des Lumieres, then DINNER.
Day 4  Morning TGV to PARIS for a central hotel.  Christmas markets, Eiffel Tower and an evening boat cruise, followed by DINNER.
Day 5  Excursion to Versailles.
Day 6  Free day to enjoy the Christmas markets, ice skating and the many wonders of Paris, before meeting for an early DINNER followed by a performance at the grand Palais Garnier (ballet or opera).
Day 7  TGV to Nice. Walk the famous Promenade des Anglais, before DINNER .
Day 8  Explore Nice, including the many art galleries and museums.
Day 9  Guided Gourmande et Culturelle walking tour of the Old Town, with a tasting of eight local delicacies.   Afternoon excursion to Monaco.
Day 10 Morning flight to BARCELONA.   Orientation walk in the afternoon.  Tapas and DINNER.
Day 11  Discover Gaudi’s amazing buildings, starting with the Sagrada Familia.
Day 12 Funicular railway up to the Parc de Montjuic for the Joan Miro Museum, then return to the town and beach by cable car.
Day 13 Parc Guell and/or Palau de la Musica Catalona …………
Day 14  22 December  Transfer to the airport for an Easyjet flight to other parts of Europe or Britain to meet up with family and friends for Christmas.   Tour ends.
 
OR join a RHINE RIVER CRUISE  (Basel to Cologne , or similar) and experience Chrstmas afloat, more markets and the fairy-tale castles of the Middle Rhine.
